In the months right after the merger with the Santa Fe, Hal Pantti explored Burlington Northern’s “Coal Country”. Beginning at Lincoln, Nebraska, Hal traveled to Alliance. Then he followed a loop, traveling over the Angora, Valley, Canyon, Orin, Black Hills, Edgemont and Butte Subdivisions, finally arriving back in Alliance for the return trip home.
In the months right after the merger with the Santa Fe, Hal Pantti explored two of Burlington Northern’s most important main lines, the ex-Northern Pacific from Eastern Montana into Minnesota, and the ex-Chicago, Burlington & Quincy from Galesburg, Illinois to Lincoln, Nebraska.
In this program we see a still independent Burlington Northern in 1994. BN was hungry for power and so we see various leased locomotives head up many of the trains.

Here is the final four years of the BN before its inclusion into BNSF. We focus on three major locations around the system, in the St Paul area at Newport, Hoffman Ave and Westminster, then along the old Northern Pacific in the Valley City, North Dakota area, and finally along the former CB&Q at Bushnell, Illinois.
It’s one of the roughest, toughest mountain passes, where heavy tonnage trains battle 2.2 percent grades and up to three sets of helpers are needed for the haul.
