1995 was the beginning of the 1990s merger mania in the railroad industry. Go back to that year and see an independent Santa Fe, Union Pacific and Burlington Northern as they dominate the railroad scene in one of the nation’s premier railroad towns, Kansas City. Train sounds are clear and exciting. Narration is limited but informative, having been written by local railfan Bob Ernst. Locations and trains are marked with on-screen captions.

This video was shot using professional equipment of the time, but is not up to the clarity of today’s high-definition video. It is however, an excellent snapshot of an important time in the nation’s railroad history. This DVD is divided into more than 70 chapters allowing you to quickly access various parts of this 2 hour video.

The “Big 3″… Union Pacific; Santa Fe; & Burlington Northern. All had a dominate role in Kansas City, and all are seen here at their finest in the city. The producer does a fantastic job covering the city and preserving the history of the 3 major lines for us to enjoy. Throw in some narration and screen captions to keep us informed…. the video is near perfect. Well done.

See what railroading was like in the mid 90’s before the mergers, I like how each of the Big 3 is broke up into sections and is all equal length, see scenes that can never be repeated again. A must have for an KC rail fan or anyone interested in the rail history there.

This was a very wonderful show. From the red and silver Santa Fe superfleet and their RS3L’s to the UP’s many SD60M powered trains to the BN’s spectacular 40 minute segment. I really loved the adventure it made me happy. what bothered me slightly was a point on the Santa Fe where the Doppler effect audio came before the lead unit passed the camera. The quality of the video looks very good considering how old the footage is. Thank you very much for bringing this footage back.

Bob Ernst put together a string of very well done Kansas City area programs… this is one of the best. I am happy to see it available again. I hope other programs from Bob will be brought back!
