St. Louis is a hotbed of American Railroading. Thirteen railroads can be found at work in the Gateway City that ranks third as a national rail center. Action abounds, even on the slowest days, as Class One roads share the spotlight with the smaller industrial railroads of the greater St. Louis area.
In Today’s St. Louis Railroads, you’ll visit all the hot spots: Gateway Yard, Gateway Arch and the Jefferson Memorial Tunnels, the Terminal Railroad’s elevated trackage, Gratiot Tower, HN Cabin (tower), Lenox Tower, MacArthur Bridge, Merchants Bridge, the Terminal Railroad’s Madison Yard, UP mainline action through Kirkwood, WR Tower, Valley Junction and many more.
You’ll see trains from the following railroads: Alton & Southern, Amtrak, Burlington Northern, Conrail, CSX, Gateway Western, Illinois Central, Manufacturer’s Railway, Norfolk Southern, St. Louis Southwestern, Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis and the Union Pacific.
You’ll experience railroading in a variety of settings from the heavily industrialized sections of the city to the scenic beauty of the rural countryside. For those who enjoy lots of variety in their trains and motive power, Today’s St. Louis Railroads has it all! Pentrex is proud to bring you this fast-paced look at railroading in the St. Louis area.

If you like looking back at what the big freight traffic boom of the 1990s looked like, then this should fit the bill. 🙂 There are all kinds of different locomotives and consists to enjoy watching. You will also get a great taste for how much of a hub St. Louis really is for the railroading industry.

Shot in 1990 prior to the NRHS convention downtown, there is a ton of diesel powered freight action on Norfolk southern, grand trunk, Burlington Northern, and more fallen flag lines. Plus there is a couple of Amtrak passenger trains.

This is another great Pentrex movie with lots of information about the railroads around St. Louis in the time the movie was made. There’s a lot of fallen flags to be seen in it as well.

Well, it is no longer “today’s” St. Louis railroads, but it is a nice snapshot of history. This is worth watching if you are a fan of recent yesteryear.

Today, in this dvd, means early- mid 90s. St Louis is a busy railroad area with 11 Railroads , 2 river crossings, and also some areas that are best seen in groups and not alone. Some very interesting lashups are shown in here. MKT, SSW, NW, SOU, TRRA, BN, etc. Good for a look back. If you are looking for a more updated version then try Rails Around Saint Louis.

The title, “Today’s St. Louis Railroads”, is a bit behind the times now, because this DVD goes back a few years to the days of Conrail, St. Louis-Southwestern, and Southern Pacific. But this historical look at St. Louis’ railroads is all the more interesting since the railfan can’t see much of this action anymore, at least with some of the paint schemes. The one-hour DVD provides a lot of variety with passenger trains, road freights, transfer runs, yard views, bridges, and so on within the St. Louis area. For me, the end-cab switchers, towers, junctions, and trackwork make this a good one that will fit well alongside another DVD, “Classic St. Louis Railroading”.
