Just as we began shooting in the 16×9 widescreen format in 2011, several Southern Railway steam locomotives were being restored to operation. In the years that followed, we made numerous trips to film these locomotives in action. This program presents some of the best scenes of these locomotives, shot over the course of a decade.

2014 marked the return to steam of one of the most famous steam locomotives in the world: Southern Railway Mikado #4501.
In June of 1993, former St. Louis & San Francisco 4-8-2 #1522 pulled a pair of trips from St. Louis to Centralia, Illinois, as a part of Norfolk Southern’s popular steam program. Lacking facilities to turn the locomotive in Centralia, Burlington Northern took the train on a pair of side trips from Centralia to Sesser, Illinois, where the train was turned on a wye. On the B.N., the train operated as an employee special.

Incorporated on February 16th, 1906, the Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern Railway grew to become the longest interurban in Iowa. Its 85-mile long mainline from Des Moines to Fort Dodge ran through many farming communities and cities in central Iowa and was an important passenger route. Including its many branch lines this railroad operated 147 miles of electrified trackage. In this presentation, the Late George Niles captures this fascinating railroad from the years 1950 to 1955.
