Our show starts on the Iowa Interstate as 2-10-2 #6988 makes a visit to Illinois to pull a series of trips to benefit first responders. The weather varied from sunny to heavy rain during her visit, and our visit concludes with the locomotive making time on a deadhead freight run.

Our next visit is to the Monticello Railway Museum in central Illinois. Part one of our visit finds Southern Railway 2-8-0 #401 in operation in July and during September’s Railroad Days. Part two of our Monticello segment looks at Bates & Rogers locomotive crane #11442, a 1944 product of the Industrial Brownhoist Corporation. Two cameras were mounted on board in addition to cameras on the ground. Days after Railroad Days in Monticello, we were in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, for vie days of filming. During the first two days, 2-10-0 #90 was captured hauling Strasburg’s regular excursion trains. The famous Decapod has now been running on the Strasburg Rail Road for 52 years; considerably longer than her first career on Colorado’s Great Western Railway.

Following two days of normal operations at Strasburg, we captured the first weekend of the “Norfolk & Western Steam Reunion” featuring Strasburg’s own N&W 4-8-0 #475 and the visiting N&W 4-8-4 #611. #475 emerged from the shop in fresh paint just before the event, and the pair of locomotives made for a fun filled weekend!

The last segment looks at Union Pacific’s newest star: Big Boy 4-8-8-4 #4014. We traveled to North Little Rock as the locomotive was headed home to Cheyenne on a two-month tour that took her to California and Texas. We stopped by as the locomotive was displayed at Jenks Shop, and then filmed #4014 and train as it headed to Van Buren, Arkansas, the next day. Along the way we captured some priceless images of the largest engine that will ever run along the former Missouri Pacific line.

This installment of the Diverging Clear Steamin’ In series features these locomotives in chronological order for nearly 2 hours on both the mainline & at tourist lines during the final year of the 2010’s decade:

    1. Iowa Interstate QJ 2-10-2 number 6988 built in 1985 or 1986 in China in its Americanized look since July of 2011 as the engine wore 3 whistles: a high-pitched one from Guatemala, a Grand Trunk Western 6 Chime, & a Deep-Toned Illinois Central Steamboat type with diesel 718 on the rear.

    2. The Monticello Railway Museum with not only Southern 2-8-0 number 401 built by Baldwin in 1907, but also a steam powered crane number 11442 built in 1944 for the Bates & Rogers construction co.

    3. The Strasburg Railroad in Lancaster County Pennsylvania with not only Great Western Decapod number 90 built by Baldwin in 1924 & even Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 number 475 also by Baldwin in 1906 in its first year of having a modified face, but also a visit from the Queen of steam & the Thoroughbred of Mainline steam itself: N&W J Class 4-8-4 number 611 built at the railroad’s Roanoke Virginia Shops in 1950. Note: these scenes were later used on Diverging Clear’s Strasburg DVD. This is the longest segment in this program.

And 4. The Best for last: Union Pacific’s newly restored 4-8-8-4 number 4014 built by Alco in 1941 on its July & August tour through the Midwest. Note: these scenes of the beast itself was later used in another Diverging Clear title: Big Boy in the Midwest.

A bonus special effect is shown at the end.

All in all, Kurt Russell did a marvelous job narrating this program.

Overall, this wasn’t a bad program… If you want a recent look at both mainline and tourist line steam in the year before COVID hit, then you might like this DVD… Just wish it was a bit longer, though.
