Climb aboard for a steam-action return to the 1970s and early 1980s when steam excursion trains thundered and whistled over the Southern Railway. Through the Super-8 color and magnetic sound-on-film photography of Terry Foshee, Green Frog follows the first generation steam program under president W. Graham Claytor, when numbers 4501, 610, 2839, and 765 offered a great nostalgic and exciting period for riders and bystanders alike.

Then, as the second generation of the steam program dawned under Graham Claytor’s brother, Robert Claytor, President of the new Norfolk Southern, we’ll follow this exciting period with number 611. Relive the sights and sounds of that grand era!

This all color program was transferred on a state-of-the-art Rank-Cintel Film Telecine, equipped with a liquid gate for outstanding color and sharp film resolution! The original sound-on-film audio adds to the excitement of this spectacular, fast paced program!

The Southern did not have the only steam program in the United States, and we bring you a few scenes of Union Pacific 4-8-4 number 844, during the years it was numbered 8444.

Contains 14 minutes of extremely interesting discussion and flash-backs with engineer Bill Purdie who was the Southern engineer on all these locomotives…listen to the great stories he tells of the trials and tribulations as well as the enjoyment of being responsible for the maintenance and day to day operations of the Southern steam program!

  1. Mwdonoughue

This program features steam engines operated during the Southern & Norfolk Southern steam programs, along with a cameo appearance by UP 8444.

  2. rickyfreni

This nearly 20-Year-Old DVD covers lots of excursions throughout the decade of Disco, & our nation’s 200th birthday as these engines perform a fine show with most of them wearing their deep-toned Steamboat whistles.

    Here’s the Timeline:

    1. 4501 heads from Stearns Kentucky to Chattanooga Tennessee with lots of pacing scenes & even a cab ride on the 1911 Baldwin built Mikado, plus a ride on the coaches. Nowadays, it is operating at the TVRM with 630. This is the longest segment in the program.

    2. Texas & Pacific 610 on various trips as it operates on various points between 1977 & 1981, which also includes pacing. Like 4501, this is also the longest segment in the entire show. Nowadays, the giant 2-10-4 is on display at the Texas State Railroad.

    3. One of Greg Scholl’s All-Time Favorite steam stars that deserved more attention is Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson 2839 (Sister Engine to 2860) as it only operated in 1979 & 1980. On one trip, F-unit 6133 is behind the steamer.

    4. NKP 765 making a unique excursion for the Newly formed NS merger in the fall of 1982 only while C&O 2716 is out of service due to its poor condition on the firebox.

    5. Also in 1982, while the NS merger was formed, N&W 611 was back in action, as the J is seen on a caboose hop during April 30, & May 1, 1983 while leaving Birmingham.

And 6. we head west as UP 844 was numbered to 8444. Here it is seen in action at an unknown year while being paced, & later rolls through Sherman hill as the credits roll.

2 bonus segments are included: an interview with Mr. Bill Purdee, & a Slideshow montage.
