With the merger of the Union Pacific and the Chicago & North Western and then the Southern Pacific, including the Rio Grande, the Union Pacific has become a new Super Railroad. This new railroad needs new Superpower, and General Electric is happy to oblige with the powerful AC60CW, which generates an incredible 6000 horsepower. This new engine joins other super engines such as the 4,380 horsepower GE C44AC, the 4000 horsepower EMD SD70M and other powerful engines. The old Wings nose herald has returned and is seen on many units.
A variety of power hauls long heavy freights over the Union Pacific’s busy Nebraska mainline, across the green countryside and through picturesque tank towns with their towering grain elevators. This fast-paced journey begins at Lodgepole, Nebraska, and works eastward to North Platte and beyond.

Union Pacific Superpower took place in 2001 when the railroad received the first of its 4,000-horsepower Electro-Motive SD70M diesel locomotives with the famous shield “wings” herald on their noses. This was not long before UP introduced the American flag paint scheme. There are plenty of AC-traction locomotives such as the EMD 4,300-hp SD90/43MAC (or SD9043AC), the General Electric AC4400CW (C44AC), and its big 6,000-hp brother, the AC6000CW (C60AC). It should be noted that some of UP’s AC60 units have 4,400-hp engines and are referred to as “convertibles”. I think I might have seen some of the legitimate C60AC’s (numbered in the 7500 series), although they are nearly identical to the convertible C6044AC variant. While most of the UP diesels shown in this video have wide noses, you can see a few standard-cab types like the EMD SD40-2 and the GE DASH 8-40C (or C40-8). If you like watching modern locomotives of the last high-horsepower race, then this video would be a great choice for fans of the SD90MAC and AC6000CW.

A great video of a great railroad during a time of transition: Shot in 2001, this video shows the brief time period before GEVOs and SD70Ms took over from the SD40-2 fleet of the 1970s through 1990s. I love the variety of trains, and love (even more) the variety of motive power during this rainbow era of the UPs existence when SP, DRGW and CNW locomotives worked along side the UP. Also nice to see is the brief period when the former DRGW and SP tunnel motors wore armour yellow (also shown here). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Another great video from WB Productions!
