Come along as Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 visits former Missouri Pacific territory in Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois in 2019 and 2021.

Our program takes a look back, as Union Pacific’s quest for ever bigger locomotives led to the 9000 class 4-12-2s, then the Challengers, and finally the Big Boys.  Vintage film shows all three types in action.

With the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Union Pacific approaching, the railroad decided to add a Big Boy to its steam program.  We look at the steam program prior to the Big Boy, before meeting up with #4014 at North Little Rock, Arkansas, in November, 2019.

On November 15th, 2019, we follow #4014 across Arkansas as the locomotive and train travel from North Little Rock to Van Buren.  Highlights on this line include Conway Tunnel, crossing lake inlets near Mill Creek and running along the Arkansas River at Ozark.

Plans to run the Big Boy were shelved in 2020, and #4014 next ran in August, 2021, on a journey to Texas, and Louisiana.  On the return to Cheyenne, the train again passed through North Little Rock before heading north to St. Louis and west to Kansas City.

We filmed #4014 in action over the course of four days, picking up the action as the train ran between North Little Rock and Poplar Bluff, Missouri.  The next three days of operations took the train to St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Kansas City.  We wrapped our shoot at Sedalia on the run to Kansas City.

It’s action on the mainline with the largest steam locomotive in the world!

The world’s largest steam locomotive. In August 2021, Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 return to the high line after Covid-19 struck everything the previous year. On November 15, 2019 Big Boy traveled from Little Rock to Van Buren, Arkansas on the south west tour. I watched the Big Boy in Oklahoma the next day. No activities were planned for the steam team in 2020 as the pandemic hit everything. However, in the summer of 2021, 4014 traveled from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana. Diverging Clear productions did not start filming the train until August 27 of that year as it traveled from North Little Rock, Arkansas to Poplar Bluff, Missouri. I arrived at Walnut Ridge that same afternoon for the service stop and within 30 minutes later, I paced alongside the 4014 until I lost him on the curve. I spent the night at Cape Girardeau after a long drive with success. The next day was the scenic highlight of the year as the 4014 crossed the Mississippi River at Thebes Bridge, Illinois. I was very fortunate to watch the 4014 in person that day and I returned home later that day. The last 2 days of the 4014 was on the old Missouri Pacific route between St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri. The video even tells the history of the early steam locomotives before the Big Boys arrived. Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 and Living Legend 844 are the proud heritage fleet of the steam program. Challenger 3985 was the world’s largest operating steam locomotive before 4014. But as mechanical problems hit 3985, it was decided to retire the locomotive and Union Pacific cannot have more than 2 steam locomotives on their roster. This is a must have for any rail enthusiast.
