4014 is the largest operational steam locomotive in the world. The now famous Big Boy class of 4-8-8-4’s were world-renowned, and folks came from around the world to see this one operating for the first time in nearly 60 years. This video record features the run from Cheyenne to Ogden.

We begin with the first run of 4014, on a break-in run from Cheyenne in the last rays of sunlight, as it heads south on the line toward Denver. We also have night scenes in Nunn, Colorado where the trial run would end. These scenes include arrival, inspection of the engine, passing freights, and servicing with grease guns and so forth.

On May 4th the epic trip to Ogden began in Cheyenne, Wyoming with the goal being Ogden, Utah to help commemorate the 150th anniversary of the joining of the first Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869. The trip took several days in 2019, as several stops were included for servicing the engine, and for viewing the engine at some locations.

Greg scholl crew did a fine job on the historic moment. Although Greg Scholl never captured the whole trip, they did have their fair share of publicity. I was there for Golden Spike 150 ceremony between May 9 & 10, 2019 and it was the greatest excursion trip I’ve ever been into and Greg Scholl had the longest video recording I’ve seen so far. The new narrator Christopher Kovacs did a fine job for the event. Greg Scholl may not be the same since John Edwards Hingsbergen died of a heart attack in 2017 at the age of 67, but overall I felt like they did well. I would give Big Boy 4014 5 stars anytime. This is the historic moment for anyone who loves trains and locomotives on the Union Pacific and the history of the driving of the Golden Spike.

In Greg’s version of the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 Revival, there is a great variety of 4 different camera crews. Which includes Bill Rogers for the night service at Nunn Colorado, Darren Guneau for the sunset scene during the test run as well as the westbound chase, plus Scott Griggs, and Narrator Christopher Kovacs (Trainmaster844), who visited the 4014 & 844 nose to nose ceremony on may 9th hosted by president & CEO Lance Fritz, plus the Golden Spike National Historic Site the following day for the 150 anniversary with Central Pacific number 60 the Jupiter & Union Pacific 119. On one scene during the Return trip, a full version of the Burlington Route Steam theme song from 2005 is used. Overall, Kovacs did an outstanding job narrating this program. And he is still going strong to be part of the GSVP family since 2018, after the regular GSVP narrator John Edward Hingsbergen passed away in November of 2017. This is an incredible must have for Railfans, big boy fans, 844 fans, GSVP fans, and people who love Kovacs’ narration.
