The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad has joined the ranks of tourist railroads operating steam power over former Denver & Rio Grande Western in southern Colorado. Unlike the more established operations that run on the former Rio Grande narrow gauge lines, the Rio Grande Scenic runs standard gauge trains.
br>Based in Alamosa, Colorado, trains run over La Veta Pass to the town of LaVeta. We visited the railroad in the summer of 2012, at which time former Grand Canyon Railway 2-8-0 #18 (originally Lake Superior & Ishpeming) was in operation. The railroad also owns former Southern Pacific 2-6-0 #1744, which was in the middle of an extensive rebuild at the time.
br>We see the trains in operation from trackside and on board, and experience the sights and sounds of steam in the southern Rockies.
br>Vintage film gives a brief background of the railroad before we move to the railroad as it is today.

With a combination of both trackside through the mountains, & also riding behind the tender of the 1910 Alco Built 2-8-0, this is a neat look at what riding on the route of the Rio Grande Standard Gauge is about before the short lived tourist railroad was out of business for good at the end of the 2019 season. Most of the Coaches have since been sold to the Reading & Northern, while the steam star of this program (operated in Colorado between 2008-2013) is undergoing restoration at the Colebrookdale Railroad in Pennsylvania.
