Climb aboard “The Fifties Express” for a trip, via rare 16mm color film shot in the 1950s, to a time when Steamers and First Generation Diesels roamed America’s railroads. You’ll see Central Vermont steamers at the White River Roundhouse, the Canadian National west of Montreal, Western Maryland freight and passenger trains between Elkins, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland, freight and passenger trains of the Baltimore & Ohio, and steam on the Pennsylvania Railroad’s famous Horseshoe Curve. You’re trackside on the the New York Central, the Nickel Plate, the Boston & Maine… and at Edaville, the two foot gauge tourist line. On the New Haven follow a steam fan trip in 1953.

Massive Y-6 compound articulated 2-8-8-2’s are featured on the Norfolk & Western along with the sleek “J” engines on the “Powhatan” and “Cavalier”. Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range articulateds move ore to the docks at Two Harbors, Minnesota. A huge Northern Pacific articulated is serviced at Bozeman, Montana. Milwaukee Road Electrics live again as the “Olympian” pulls out of Three Forks, Montana. A pair of “Little Joe’s” arrive with a freight.

The Grand Finale…The scene shifts to the North where the Canadian Rockies form a grand backdrop for the steam and diesel powered trains of the Canadian Pacific.

Through the Films of Irv August, & the informative narration of Rege Cordic, this program features a lot of Steam & Diesels on some of the fallen flag railroads.

Here are the road names that they appeared in order:

    6. Pennsylvania on Altoona’s Horseshoe Curve.

    7. New York Central at Hudson, NY in November of 1952, & with the Nickel Plate near Westfield.

    8. B&M with the P2 Pacific type locomotives & diesels at Reading MA that is now part of the MBTA Commuter Rail’s Haverhill Line.

    9. The Original Edaville in Carver MA, now a southern New England Family Friendly theme park with a Thomas the Tank Engine section there.

    10. New Haven with Mikado 3016 on an excursion in 1953 from New Haven to Willimantic & Back, plus an appearance by a Central Vermont Doubleheader.

    11. N&W with Y6 Class 2-8-8-2s, Class A 2-6-6-4s, 4-8-0 496 switching some cars, & even the J class Northerns with a K class 4-8-2.

This is a great video with some amazing shots. I especially enjoyed the N&W and CP segments, which show some amazing landscapes and engines. I also enjoyed the New Haven segments, as I don’t live very far from there. Highly recommend!
