This is volume 2 of the excellent 2 volume series, “Steam and Diesel on the B&O”. We begin with the end of steam in the 1950s. Though this is the end, there is plenty of steam to see at Deshler, Attica Junction, Willard, South Lima, Lorain, Warwick and other places in northern Ohio. Our search leads us to 4-8-2s, 2-8-2s, 2-10-2s, 0-8-0s and the big EM1 class articulated 2-8-8-4s.
We also see the new diesels that are beginning to take over every train type. In the same area as our steam finds, we catch a variety of diesel action. Both steam and diesel segments have genuine B&O sound. When we move forward in time, it is to the 1970s and we see the beginnings of the Chessie System, and the Chessie Steam Special as it visited Northern Ohio in 1977. Pulled by ex-Reading T-1 #2101, the special was filmed as it ran from Fostoria to Toledo with a service stop at Walbridge.
We also see some Erie-Lackawanna, Conrail, and one scene of Amtrak’s Cardinal. Maps are included for most locations. 16mm film from Don Krofta’s collection while sound is from the collection of Jim Hawk. Danny Harom narrates.
