Linking 13 Great States with the Nation – that was the slogan of the B&O Railroad. Step back to the 1950s and ’60s to see what made the B&O one of the all-time great railroads! The action takes place in Ohio and Pennsylvania, starting in 1954 when steam was king. Articulated locomotives, Mikes, Big Sixes, and more roll past the camera. You’ll catch the action at the Lorain ore dock where steam trains unload ships laden with iron ore and will also spend time watching the steam switchers at Rossford Yard in Toledo. Then you’ll get a look at E- and F-units and Geeps in the classic Baltimore & Ohio paint scheme.
The famous Cincinnatian, which ran from Detroit to Toledo on NYC track and to Cincinnati on the B&O line, is extensively covered. You’ll see it under steam and on many runbys headed by diesels. Other passenger trains appear, including the Shenandoah and Nickel Plate’s Westerner. B&O blue and gray, lightning stripe New York Centrals, C&O yellow and blue, Bessemer orange, and other colorful fallen flags fill the screen with excitement. Volume 1 of B&O Odyssey, which covers the years 1954 to 1964, is based on the works of noted railroad photographer Emery Gulash.

B&O Odyssey Vol. #1 covers a 10 year period of time (1954 to 1964) with steam and diesels, passengers and freights. This is a good presentation of a time frame that many of us either were very young, or not born yet. So the historical value is very important here. The model railroaders will love many of the scenes as life from days gone by is relived.
Overall, a good video for the fans interested in the B&O, and in the early diesels that worked the US Northeast region.

This video is perhaps the best footage of mid-1950’s rail action I’ve seen. Good camera work, amazing picture/video quality and sound! The subjects are interesting and the video an overall joy to watch. Not only will the rail historian and/or model railroader find this video to be a fascinating source of information, it’s also just fun to watch! Well done and highly recommended!
