In 1965, the last of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club’s toured the Rio Grande narrow gauge by train from Alamosa to Silverton.

Famous railfan photographer Emery Gulash purchased a round trip ticket on the train, and then proceeded to chase the train across the Colorado and New Mexico countryside from Alamosa to Durango and back. This was the last passenger train run on this line. In 1969 the Rio Grande abandoned the narrow gauge. See all the favorite narrow gauge locations, such as Pagosa Junction (Gato), Ignacio, Monero, Lumberton, Dulce and of course Alamosa, Chama and Durango. The countryside in between was beautifully captured by Emery’s 16mm Bolex camera on 16 mm film. Many rare angles in this film had never been shown by any photographer at this point in time. Locos captured are numbers 483 a K-36 class, 498 a class K-37 as helper and K-28 473 which pulls the train back from Alamosa after the trip!

Originally released in 1989, Bob Carrera narrated this historic look at one of the final passenger trains of the D&RGW narrow gauge’s 4th division from Alamosa to Durango & back with 483 in charge, before the tracks between Chama & Durango have since been ripped up for good as well as the third rail from Alamosa to Antonito being converted from Dual gauge to standard gauge, that was filmed by none other than Emery Gulash. Some of these scenes were later used in the Top Frog Series.
There is one tiny goof: Carrera says that the line from Antonito to Chama crosses the state line 8 times when it should’ve meant 11 times.

The date is May 29, 1965 and the Rocky Mountain railroad club sponsored on one of the last runs between Alamosa and Durango, Colorado before the line was abandoned in 1969.
