See the colorful diesels of the Ferrocarril de Antofagasta e Bolivia hauling their heavy loads over totally barren Cumbre Pass, across the Atacama Desert and in to the Andes at the Bolivian Border. Next, we see elderly EMD’s of the Ferronor Diego de Almagro Sector struggling up the 3.5% grade to the smelter at Potrerillos. This line was washed out after our visit and is now closed. The Ferronor Vallenor sector uses brand new EMD GT46AC’s in a 24 hours a day service carrying iron ore from a mine to the port at Huasco. We also see the now abandoned narrow gauge Ferrocarril Tocopilla, which used Chilean built electric locomotives to carry nitrates from the Atacama Desert mines to the port at Tocopilla.

Here is a much different railroad scene from what we are used to in North America. Absolutely fantastic action as the trains work up steep grades with ore loads. Great to watch the electrified railroad as well hauling heavy loads. It’s a barren, yet scenic region to see. Diffinately worth owning this video.

This DVD was a great surprise, excellent coverage of Chile’s narrow gauge mining railroads. Lots of run byes and most of the trains are shown in there entirety giving a good look at some very interesting locomotives and equipment. Good narration explaining the train, area and climate. If you enjoy something different I think you will enjoy this.
