The Louisville & Indiana Railroad, Volume 1
The LIRC line is a 106 mile stretch of track that runs between Louisville, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana. It was purchased from Conrail in 1994 and was former Pennsylvania Railroad line. It began operations on March 12th, 1994 and was formed by parent company Anacostia and Pacific Co., Inc. one of the leading regional railroad firms in the U.S. The LIRC connects with the CSX, SIND, INRD, NS and Paducah and Louisville Railroads.Major customers are Carter Lumber, Essroc Cement (Former Louisville Cement Company), Consolidated Grain and Barge Company, Genpak plastics, Ranger Enterprises, Kokomo Grain and Voss Industries.

In Volume Two we continue our journey along the Louisville and Indiana Railroad. We also continue to learn more about the history of this line, the industries and the communities it serves. We will follow many LIRC trains, CSX Trains, see former L & N and Seaboard units, see a former C & O SD40 which also wore the famous Chessie paint scheme. Witness some Kentucky Derby Special Trains and view the Tequila Express Private car. Louisville & Indiana Railroad, Volume 3, The L&I’s Pennsy Heritage>/strong> In Volume Three of the Louisville and Indiana Railroad series we concentrate on the southern terminus of the line in Jeffersonville, Indiana and directly across the Ohio river to the railroad’s final destination of Louisville. We will focus on the line’s Pennsy Heritage and see remnants of the Pennsylvania Railroads legacy in the Louisville area. We will visit Clagg Tower, the 14th Street bridge, which allowed the Pennsy to gain access to Louisville, former locations of the Pennsy roundhouse and engine facilities, Panama yard, and we will learn more about the history of the Pennsy’s occupation in this area and more about the business and industries it once served. The Keystone emblem is alive and well in 2015 and the LIRC carries the torch for one of the great fallen flags.
