Shortlines and regionals are a vital source of traffic for the big Class 1 Railroads. Much of Conrail’s traffic in the Northeast fit this pattern. In the late 1980s to mid 1990s, Tim Wakeman & Jerry Albertie explored these smaller feeder railroads. They didn’t sit at one location watching the trains go past. This is serious train chasing-railfanning! Tim and Jerry’s eye for “Working on the Railroad” is displayed in many great scenes!

For anyone looking for a good video presentation of the northeast USA shortlines of the past… here is an excellent video. History is preserved showing several roadroads that served Conrail. The scenery of the region is well shown & the colour of the scenes is really good.
A couple oddities of note… a Deere pulling a set of chain harrows on a public road is seen (not sure what the operator was harrowing 🙂 ) & a dog that maybe was in training to be a railroad conductor is seen sitting on a seat in an engine (cheap labour?).
Well pleased with this video. Recommended for any one’s video library.
