Utah’s four major interurban lines come back to life in this special video. See the splendid Bamberger RR, classic interurban Salt Lake & Utah, the lengthy Utah Idaho Central and the famous Saltair lines of the “Garfield, Salt Lake & Western” — as well as the entertaining, and famous, Salt-Air Pavilion. This was one of the earliest “theme-parks” that met with Utah’s values and provided local-folk with a good time and wholesome fun. And don’t miss the huge Bingham Canyon open-pit copper mine and electric trains. It’s the largest mine of its type on Earth.

The Bingham Canyon mine operation was so large that it could actually be seen from outer space as a significant topological feature from the Space Station! We bring the culture, history and rail lines and industrious ways of the people of the Greater Salt Lake Region to life with all vintage film! You’ll see passenger and freight operation from the 20s to the 50s. The little streetcars in the cities of the region and an early and important theme park (built by the Bamberger line) are special topics. To quote Railfan & Railroad magazine, “…a very PBS-quality presentation.”

When Railfans think of Utah, they thought of Soldier Summit, Arches National Park, Silver Zone Pass, Weber Canyon, Echo Canyon, the Heber Valley Scenic Railroad, the Ogden Union Station Museum to see 844’s sister engine 833 on display, mainline freight & passenger trains on Union Pacific with Amtrak’s California Zephyr plus fallen flags like Rio Grande, Western Pacific, & Southern Pacific, & of course, the Golden Spike National Historic Site at Promontory Summit.

But in this program, the Great Salt Lake State itself used to have a variety of Electric Railways on the Bamberger (named after State Govenor Simon Bamberger) with Lagoon Park, Utah Idaho Central, Salt Lake Garfield & Western with the Saltair Pavilion & a Rail Diesel Car from North Carolina’s Aberdeen & Rockfish with General Electric 44 Toner Switchers in the ’70s, Salt Lake & Utah Railroad with Observation Car 751 on the Sacramento Northern which is now at the Western Railway Museum, & the Kennicott Copper Corporation that operated from the Bingham Canyon Mine to Hercules, Bonneville, & Garfield with 2 electric referenced to a pair of NKP Berkshires: 755, & 763, especially while working in the winter.

As always, every Charles Smiley title would have countless still images, & tons of vintage films, which for instance on one scene, a pair of Union Pacific’s since been scrapped 3800 series 4-6-6-4 Challengers are on a freight.
