Famous Norfolk & Western steam power on the famed grades of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1955 to 1958 William P. Price took his cameras to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The result is this program featuring Bill’s unforgettable scenes of Norfolk & Western Steam Classics in action.

Those fascinating Mallets, the Y6 2-8-8-2’s, Class A 2-6-6-4’s and the Z Class 2-6-6-2’s are seen thundering over Blue Ridge Summit east of Roanoke. To the west, Christiansburg Grade presents a formidable barrier to these huge steamers. North of Roanoke Y6’s and K Class 4-8-2’s pound up the Shenandoah Line to Hagerstown, Maryland.

The Norfolk & Western’s famous J 4-8-4 engines head up the passenger trains Powhatan Arrow, Pocahontas, Cavalier and the Tennessean. There was variety in the Blacksburg Mixed pulled by a Class M 4-8-0. Number 578, a Class E2 4-6-2 Pacific, rolls the Norton Local through the Virginia countryside. Plus these added attractions…Southern Railway #4501 leads an excursion over Norfolk & Western rails in October, 1966. Also you’ll take a Vista Dome trip on the diesel powered Powhatan Arrow in 1966. This action filled tribute to Norfolk & Western’s Steam Classics is yours now to enjoy in your own home in full color with an informative narrative by Rege Cordic.

This program includes both freight and passenger trains pulled by some of the N&W’s finest steam locomotives, with three of the engines being future survivors. We also see the Jawn Henry steam turbine and SOU 4501 during its first year of excursion service.

With a great variety of Synthesized music, big steam power on blue ridge & Christiansburg grades, N&W steam still stands forever. There are also some clips of future famous survivors like 2156, 578, & of course 611. Experimental turbine 2300 the John Henry also makes an appearance as well as the first excursion years of 4501 in 1966. Here’s an interesting fact: the Since been scrapped Z class 2-6-6-2s were the N&W’s very first articulated locomotives.

Being a huge N&W fan and always admiring Bill Prices photos and movies for many years this movie was a very big let down. I have a lot of items shot by Bill and none are as blurry and out of focus as this tape. I doubt if it was anything he did and probably done in the transfer process. It’s a shame as the subject matter and everything else is top notch. Unless you are really into the N&W I would stay away from this poor quality video.
