Newly restored Reading 4-8-4 #2102 operates 3 roundtrips, with long trains with a dozen coaches or more. This is one of the loudest engines you’ll ever hear, so this is a loud run! The first trip of the 2022 summer season runs the stiff grade north of Tamaqua. The second trip, was a doubleheader with Reading 2101 running with Reading & Northern 4-6-2 #425! The final trip we filmed, we get a bit of pacing as well as more great stack talk. The line has a lot of features, including stations, junctions, tunnels, bridges and much more. Northbound, the grades are from Tamaqua to Haucks, and from High Bridge to Hometown. On the return trip trip it’s mostly upgrade from Jim Thorpe to Hometown. 2102 is a great looking engine and it puts on a great show on all these trips. Also included is some history on these 4-8-4’s including some vintage film clips.

In Volume 1 of Greg’s Steam on the Reading & Northern Trilogy, the newly restored T1 class 4-8-4 which was originally built in 1923 as an I10 class 2-8-0 consolidation before it was rebuild into a Northern in 1945, the 2102 is operating on all of the summer 2022 trips from Reading Outer Station to Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania & return via Port Clinton & East Mahanoy Junction: one on July 2nd, one on August 13th with Former Gulf Mobile & Northern 4-6-2 number 425 as both engines wore the same Reading 6 Chime Whistles, & one more on September 3rd with pacing sequences at Nesquehoning. Plus, there is also a test run with 50 empty hoppers in Tamaqua during the Opening Credits.
Note the former Illinois Central coaches in 2102’s trains as they were purchased from the already closed Rio Grande Scenic in Colorado, as well as former Norfolk Southern F-unit 4270 as 270 & B-Unit 4275 as 275, not to mention the wye at Nesquehoning that goes to Steamtown in Scranton.
Aside from the GSVP camera team which consists of Brady Sanker, Frank Garon, Amy Gibson, & Chris Kovacs, James Parfrey of Steam Train Videos, the late TJ Weber of Belt Line Productions, & Revelation video was also on the 2102 revival, while just like Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 West from May 2019, this is the second GSVP title to have footage shot by Chris himself who was Greg’s narrator since 2018.
During the history segment of the T1, some vintage scenes of 2102’s sister engines shot by AJ Crocket was shown in Greg’s 2017 title: Eastern Steam Trips, as well as a one clip look at 2101 in 1977 or 1978 by Greg which was shown in his 2012 title: The 2101 Story.
