Yard Goat Images is proud to present two classic Berkshire Productions videos, “The American Northern” and the “Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad.

There is something special about a steam locomotive. It has a heart, a soul, and seems almost alive. It was one of man’s most alluring machines, and they always conveyed adventure, power, and romance.

One of these magnificent machines was ex-Reading T1, number 2102. A home-built 4-8-4, the 2102 was built in 1945 at the Reading Railroad shops in Reading, Pennsylvania. She served the Reading well until they dieselized their locomotive fleet in the late 1950’s. The 2102 powered power many of the “Iron Horse Rambles” excursions which the Reading Railroad ran through the fall of 1964.

fThis video shows her excursion operations on the Blue Mountain and Reading Railroad in 1988. Cab footage and track side action make for an exciting video.

The Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad – 60 minutes

The Blue Mountain & Reading is a tourist line located in eastern Pennsylvania, running between Temple and South Hamburg. The BM&R uses several historic steam and diesel locomotives to power their trains. Made in cooperation with the BM&R staff, this program tells the story of the BM&R and features all of their historic equipment.

Ex-GM&N 4-6-2 steamer no. 425 and ex-Reading 4-8-4 no. 2102 provide the smoke and stack talk, while ex-Reading GP30 #5513 and Ex-PRR E8’s 5706 and 5898 growl and roar. Along with the railroad’s RDC’s, this program has a wide variety of motive power that you are certain to enjoy! There is a lot of cab time in this one, including a night run in a Pennsy E8.

Produced and Directed by Grant G. Geist

Digitally re-mastered, these two videos bring you almost two hours of steam and diesel action.

In the 2102 American Northern portion of this combo from 1989, there are not only vintage films (silent & sound) of other road names in addition to the Reading: B&O, Jersey Central, Atlantic Coast Line, Lackawanna, Norfolk & Western, Grand Trunk with GTW 4070 alone & double-heading with 2102, & Penn Central by Mr. Neil Boggiano & the Steve Neff Collection, but there are also cameo scenes of the Pennsylvania E8s, the Budd Cars, Reading Lines GP30 number 5513, & former Gulf Mobile & Northern 4-6-2 number 425. The majority of these trips were with 2102 on both the Hamburg to Temple line, & out on the mainline to the still closed Gettysburg railway on one trip in 1988. It ran for 54 minutes.

In the BM&R portion of this combo that was made in 1990, there are more films & more scenes of 425, 2102, 5513, the Budd Cars, and even the Pennsylvania E8s with lots of cab ride footage. Not to mention stock footage from 2102 the American Northern. It ran for a full hour. Both of these programs are narrated by Dan Bradford.

Most of these scenes were also used in the Berkshire Montage series & also the I Love Toy Trains Classic Series, I Love Big Trains Part 3, & All About Trains by TM Books & Video.

Nowadays since the mid-late 2000s, the 2 steam engines of the show as well as the Budd cars are at the Port Clinton shops, while the diesels are on display at Hamburg known as the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum due to the tracks from there to Temple being blocked by really long lines of freight cars.

Oh & one more thing: after working for the Southern Steam Program in 1979 & 1980 only (not to mention being used in Universal’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter”), & before being on display in California, one of Greg Scholl’s favorite short-lived steam stars: Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson 2839 was at one time on display at the BM&R.

Did you know that 2102 appeared in the film: Maria’s Lovers?
