All aboard for an exciting look of a few of the Reading Iron Horse Rambles filmed on 8mm film in the early 60’s by an amateur railfan photographer who worked for the Reading. These Rambles traveled through the Anthracite region and beyond, en route to West Milton, passing through Tamaqua, Shamokin and towns in between. Many long-gone views of the railroad are seen, as well as visits to area coal operations.

The Reading ran a total of 51 “Iron Horse Rambles” from 1959 to 1964. The first Ramble was led by T-1 #2124 on October 25, 1959, with #2124 pulling a 16 car train from Wayne Junction to Shamokin.

The excursions continued using #2124, #2100 and #2102 until the last Ramble was run on October 17th, 1964.

This Un-Narrated DVD from 2009 covers a comprehensive look at these 4-8-4s in the Keystone state.

    Here’s the Timeline:

    1. 2124 (still on display at Steamtown in Scranton Pennsylvania) in Port Clinton during October of 1961 with locations at Tamaqua that has E unit 907 coupling up to the consist, Ryan’s Cut, Mainville Fall, Susquehanna River bridge, West Milton depot, Sunbury, Glen Burn Colliery, Shamokin, Locust Summit, & ends at Gordon Engine Terminal.

    2. An October 1962 Doubleheader with 2100 (Under Restoration in Cleveland Ohio), & 2102 (recently returned to active service) from Port Clinton to West Milton once again, this time with more spots like the Atlas Power Plant, Reynolds Depot, M-Y Tower & Spruce Street in Tamaqua, with St. Nick Yard, & a more detailed look at the Glen Burn Coaling plant. Plus, Bucknell College at Lewisburg. Later on, 900 & 904 was added to the train while the steamers are cut off.

    3. A Diesel only trip in & out of Reading due to high fire risk. Meanwhile, 2100 moves to the display track at Reading Outer Station. On this trip, a light green Observation car from the Strasburg Railroad is on the excursion. Budd Cars & E units are shown at Pulpit Rock, Reynolds, Haucks Diamond, & a more detailed look at the St. Nicholas coaling plant.

And 4. 2100 in May of 1964 at Catawissa, West Milton, Sunbury, & ends at Gordon.

Well, I have several videos on the Reading Rambles and their beautiful T-1’s but I like this one best. I have 7 videos by John Pechulis and even though most come from 8mm originals they are well done and always interesting. The Rambles were as close to “normal” operation as one could get. No circus colors of cars from every railroad in the country……….just pure Reading equipment in pure Reading territory. Authentic and bound to make the heart skip a beat of those of us who grew up during the time of these great Ramble trips and before. I highly recommend this one to lovers of steam, passenger trains and great scenery.
