We get a look at the Southern through two of her own promotional films: “Piggyback Southern Style”, made in the early 1960s, and “Via Sevier” a film that follows two box cars through the system in the 1950s.
Part 2 of this series covers the final 15 years of operation in the Keystone State. Vintage diesels abound, but we’ll also see the Readings famous T1 4-8-4s power The Rambles at several locations around the system.
The Reading Company was the favorite railroad of Allentown, Pennsylvania native Charles Houser, Sr, who filmed throughout the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Steam and Diesel are included in this rare color and black & white film.

This program includes mostly 16mm color and black/ white film of Steam and Diesel action during the 1930s-40s-50s-and 60s in Massachusetts, Eastern New York, Ohio and Indiana. Beginning in Boston on the Boston and Albany, the program moves west along the NYCs Water Level Route.
This program covers the years 1964-1979 along the former Nickel Plate Road from Buffalo to Ft. Wayne (New Haven). Filmed by N&W employee Edward Durnwald, this program is a diesel fan’s Dream. Not only are the varied lash-ups of EMD, Alco and GE units nice, but the many paint schemes and one-of-a-kind units must be seen to be believed.
We see the NKP from 1950 to 1964, beginning in its hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. The action then moves to southeastern Ohio on the former Wheeling and Lake Erie in the Coshocton and Adena areas, before ending up at Conneaut, Ohio, with a cab ride side trip to Buffalo. Vintage steam and diesel.
Vignettes of the Milwaukee Road covers this colorful railroad from Chicago, through its hometown of Milwaukee to St. Paul. Along the way, you’ll see lightning fast passenger trains with skytop observation cars, pulled by E- and F-units, freights behind Fs and GP40s, locals behind ALCo RS units, and more.
Reaching from Chicago to Colorado and the Mexican border in Texas, the Missouri Pacific Lines colorful history merged with that of the Union Pacific in 1986. This program recalls the Eastern End of the system from the Chicago area to St Louis and Kansas City from the mid-1950s to 1981.
Volume 3 covers The Big Little Railroad for almost its entire length from Jersey City to the Scranton, Pennsylvania vicinity during its final 15 years. Among the many locations featured are Communipaw, Bound Brook, Bethlehem, Allentown, Lehighton and Jim Thorpe. Cab views too!

The CNJs multiple track mainline, used by parent company Baltimore and Ohio and sister company Reading is featured being utilized by all three companies in Jersey City, Communipaw, Elizabethport, Elizabeth, Aldene, Cranford, Plainfield, Middlesex, and Bound Brook.
This program covers the years 1948 to 1963 and features the steam and diesel power of that era. Beginning near Jersey City, locations visited include High Bridge, Green Pond, Easton, Bethlehem, Allentown, Mauch Chunk, Glen Onoko, Ashley, Wilkes-Barre, and more. Featured motive power ranges from Camelback switchers to SD35s, and includes Pacifics, Babyfaces, Trainmasters, RSs, Geeps, and Fs.
Part 2 of the EL series picks up where Part 1 left off and covers the years 1970 to 1976. We’ll see EL, Penn Central, Chessie System and Norfolk and Western action at AC Tower and get a look at the Marion Humpyard, a trip down the Dayton Branch, and east of Marion to Galion and Mansfield.
Like spokes on a wheel, 4 major railroads converged on Marion, Ohio from 5 directions. For the NYC, C&O and Pennsylvania to cross at one location would assure a busy junction – but add the Erie Lackawanna with its major yard and locomotive shop – and Marion is elevated to a train watching mecca. This is a time of transition for the B&O: Steam to diesel, first generation to second generation diesel and from the 1950s to the 1960s. Rare film gives us a peek at that exciting time.
Watch rare film from the 1940s and 1950s of B&O steam, much of it on Sand Patch Grade. Mostly color, some 1940s film is in B&W.
The second volume of this series features the B&O’s finest steam. From rare 1954 film footage we see steam powering passenger trains on the West End between Grafton, West Virginia and Cumberland, Maryland. We also steam at the head end of freights over Sand Patch Grade and coal trains on the old Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburgh near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Featuring the color film Karl Walters, Vignettes of the Baltimore and Ohio, Volume 1 documents Karl’s penchant for branch lines and smaller steam locomotives. Karl was trackside during the transition years on the B&O to film steam engine classics and the newest diesels.
It’s the 1970’s era of the BN in Washington and Montana, as well as pre-merger views of the Burlington, Northern Pacific, and Great Northern with pre-merger CB&Q, NP and GN in the Twin Cities, Montana and Nebraska.
