Like spokes on a wheel, 4 major railroads converged on Marion, Ohio from 5 directions. For the NYC, C&O and Pennsylvania to cross at one location would assure a busy junction – but add the Erie Lackawanna with its major yard and locomotive shop – and Marion is elevated to a train watching mecca.
In Part One of this two part look at the “Friendly Service Route”, we visit Marion during the 1960’s, with a look at the other 3 railroads which all crossed at Marion’s Union Station. The EL’s eclectic roster of PA units and E- and F- units, RS3s, Geeps and SDs are seen in many different lashups, on many types of trains. Don’t miss one of the sharpest paint-schemes in the east, on one of the most charismatic railroads ever.
