A “Head End” ride aboard an Amtrak F40PH diesel engine on the “Lake Shore Limited” winding down along the Hudson River on the former New York Central main line from Albany, N.Y. to Croton-Harmon (part 22-1) where the F40PH is cut off and we board an Amtrak FL-9 diesel-electric (which was trailing behind the F40PH) for the balance of the trip into Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
It was during a turbulent time in railroading history that noted photographer Jerry Carson chose to capture many major changes for America’s railroads. Photographed in crisp, sharp 16mm.
Railroaders called it ‘The Chama Turn’, and sometimes the Cumbres Turn. Most railfans knew the operations over Cumbres simply as the Cumbres Pass Route.
Over 20 operating steam locomotives traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia to participate in the largest gathering of steam in recent time. Locomotives from England, Canada, and the United States were there for the Grand Parade of Steam!
