A “Head End” ride on an Amtrak AEM-7 electric engine from Penn Station, New York City to New Haven, CT over the former New York, New Haven, and Hartford line. We depart from Penn Station and pass through the East River Tunnels to Queens, NY. We pass “Harold” tower (operated by the L.I.R.R.), cross the Hell Gate Bridge while viewing the New York skyline, pass over the Pelham Bay Bridge and continue on to “Shell” tower (New Rochelle, N.Y.). We will pass all the Metro North commuter stations, stopping at Stamford and Bridgeport, CT and continue on to New Haven. Many other Amtrak, Conrail, and Metro North trains are seen along the way. Narration referring to speed, signal indication, track designation, stations, cities, towers and other points of interest as well as radio transmissions of trains, tower operators, and train dispatchers, highlight the entire trip.

The date is January 13th 1986, & Walt Berko is inside the cab of Amtrak’s since been scrapped AEM-7 number 946 from New York City’s Penn Station over the 4 track bridge on the city’s East River to New Haven Connecticut (the starting point of other cab ride videos that Walt produced: 2 on the Springfield Massachusetts line via Hartford, & a 2 part series from New Haven to Boston via Providence Rhode Island) with meets of other trains like Long Island Commuter, Conrail, & Metro-North, as well as locations like Bait Interlocking, Oak Point Yard, Market Tower, Hunt’s point station, Westfield Station, Bronx river bridge, Bridgeport, Ryde station, Riverside Tower, West Stam interlocking, Stamford, Marion, South Norwalk with the signal tower that is now a museum, Saugatuck river bridge, Bear Road Tower, the power plant near the Tuckanock River, Indian River Bridge, & other stations not to mention commentary from the driver of the electric unit with chatters from the scanning radio.

Keep in mind that these footages were recorded way before Amtrak extended the electrification from New Haven Connecticut to Boston’s South Station in Massachusetts. Not only that but there are also some other things that are no longer on Amtrak’s busiest mainline like Semaphore Signals, & level crossings from New York City to Boston even though Connecticut is the only state on the Northeast Corridor to use a handful of level crossings.
