The Wabash railroad had essentially two main lines: Chicago to Kansas City, and Detroit – Toledo to Kansas City. Emery Gulash followed the Wabash over these two lines, capturing first generation diesels, some name passenger trains (such as The Wabash Cannonball), and quite a bit of freight action as well! You’ll visit locations such as Detroit: (and Fort Street Union Station), Ft. Wayne, Mexico Missouri, Oakwood Yard, Windsor and Toledo, as well as many other locations. This DVD covers the time period from 1952 through 1966 after the merger with the N&W.

Originally released in 1992, this installment of the Green Frog Heritage Series covers not only the F Units, Alco PA’s, Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters & Geeps on a freight & passenger railroad famous for its song: Wabash Cannonball, but there are also railway boats, other Road Names like Canadian National with a special cameo appearance by 4-8-4 number 6167, & Alco S2 number 8494 helping the northern to get its train ready, A rare EMD NW5 from an unknown railroad, Detroit & Toledo Shortline, Detroit Toledo & Ironton with a GP7 on a Caboose Hop, Ann Arbor with GP35 number 385 that now resides in Owosso along with Pere Marquette 1225, & Chicago & Northwestern 175, as well as Chicago & Western Illinois, & Norfolk & Western.

These films were captured in 1952, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, & 1966 (the final year before the fallen flag of the Midwest was owned by Norfolk & Western).

Locations include 4th Street Union Depot in Detroit, Delray Junction Tower & Roundhouse with a turntable, Romulus Junction Tower & depot, Fort Wayne Indiana (the home for Nickel Plate 765), Mexico Missouri, Oakwood Yard, Windsor Ontario in Canada, St. Thomas bridge & Sports field, Walkerville with the Ford Water Tower in the going away shot, OJ Tower with 2 of the 3 F-units numbered after 2 Steam Locomotives: Norfolk & Western 611, & Southern 722, as well as new subway cars on the rear of the same train with 2 cabooses as these built in St. Louis Machines are heading for the Eastern Seaboard (most likely New York City), Bellville Michigan, Milan Michigan at Ann Arbor Diamond, Huron River Bridge at French Landing, and Melvindale.

On one segment near the end of this program, there is a special segment where the footage at Delray have to be sped up with music added, then it stops & starts a couple of times until the tune is over.

Another railroad that I knew very little about before the purchase of this video. The American midwest is the location, with a tad in southwest Ontario. Freights & passengers are seen over roughly 15 years in the 1st generation diesel time frame. Like all Emery Gulash productions, history is preserved for us for many years ahead. Excellent work.

This program showcases many freigh5 and passenger trains run by the Wabash in the United States, and also in Southern Ontario.
