Explore Union Pacific’s Oregon Short Line Route between Pocatello and Montpelier, Idaho. The classic western backdrop of eastern Idaho creates a beautiful setting for trains to run through.

This program begins with an incredible aerial view of UP’s Pocatello Yard then follows the main line eastward along the winding course of the Portneuf River. The railroad follows the old Oregon Trail as it negotiates canyons, mountains, and valleys. It passes small western communities and towns, most of which are deeply tied to the railroad..

The Pocatello Sub is an important connection between the Overland Route at Granger, Wyoming and the Pacific Northwest. Long stack trains frequent the line, along with a mix of manifests and unit soda ash, grain, and tank trains. Locals also serve industry at Soda Springs, Bancroft, and Montpelier.

Big diesel power includes a great mix of rebuilt General Electric AC’s now classified as AC4400CWM’s sporting UP’s newest paint scheme. Along with new and rebuilt diesels, UP Big Boy 4014 makes a few appearances as it returns to Cheyenne from California..

Shot in both summer and winter, this is your front-row seat to the action on the Pocatello Subdivision!

In Part 1 of the 7Idea Pocatello Subdivision series, there are not only a parade of freights through the Southeastern part of the Potato state itself, but also a visit from Big Boy 4014 with Heritage Unit 1983 on the return trip to Cheyenne Wyoming from Roseville California via the Great Salt Lake, Silver Zone Pass, the Feather River Canyon where the 1941 Alco built 4-8-8-4 met up with the SD70ACE at the nearby Western Pacific Railroad Museum, & Donner Pass. All of these scenes were recently filmed in both January & July of 2024.

Locations for the first part include Pocatello Yard with Ross Park that has Centennial unit 6901 (the sister engine to 6936), & 2-8-2 Mikado 2005 sitting on display with Oregon Short Line Caboose 5784 between the locomotives, Inkom along the Portneuf River, McCammon Junction where it connects with the Odgen Utah line, Lava Hot Springs, Pebble, Bancroft, Talmage with Highway route 30, Soda Springs Junction with a Geyser, a Motorized Railway Bus/Galloping Goose on display, some snow busting equipment, Since-Retired Dash 8’s & 9’s on storage tracks, & a nearby Branch line to Dry Valley, Manson with 5379 running light all alone on one scene, & ends at Montpelier Idaho.

Aside from the UP, other road names include Southern Pacific, & a mention of Amtrak’s since discontinued Pioneer.

Stock Footage from other 7Idea shows on the Idaho Main Line Trilogy, & the Blue Mountains are used, as well as angles from both the ground, & high in the sky.
