Come along for a look at the only steam locomotive never retired by a Class I railroad in the U.S., Union Pacific 4-8-4 #844.
Our program begins with a look at vintage Union Pacific passenger power, and the 800 series 4-8-4s in their prime in the forties and fifties. Following steam’s retirement, the very last steam locomotive purchased by the U.P., FEF-3 class #844, was kept on for occasion use on excursions.
We begin in 1989, the last year the locomotive ran as #8444 to clear the way for the 800 series GP30s. By 1990, the diesel was gone and the steam locomotive was back with her original number as #844.
The footage for this program was shot over the course of 27 years from 1989 to 2016. In 1989 and 1990, the locomotive wore the two-tone gray paint that adorned many of the 4-8-4s (and a few 4-6-6-4 Challengers) in the late forties and early fifties. By 1996, she was back in her accustomed black attire.
Over the years, #844 is seen in action in Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.
Union Pacific calls her the Living Legend, and this action-packed DVD presents nearly two hours of the legendary locomotive’s travels.

If you love other programs from Diverging Clear Productions, then you will certainly enjoy this one as well. This program, with one of our most beloved 4-8-4 Northerns as the subject matter, offers SO much “variety” when it comes to covering numerous different years of operations.

Since Christmas Eve 1944, Union Pacific FEF-3 #844 is the only mainline steam locomotive in America that has never been retired or restored. This video shows many trips from the previous 3 decades in many locations. One of the highlights from the video came in 2011 when the u44 crossed the Mississippi River at Thebes Bridge, Illinois as it would eventually spend the night at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. 2016 was the first time I got to witness the locomotive in person at Kansas City Union station. Ironically, that same year Big Boy 4014 was on the road to restoration and as of 2021 both 4014 and 844 are the only two steam locomotives on the Union Pacific roster. This is a must have.
