Big steam power – PLUS – vintage diesels, classic interurbans, and Chicago’s finest commuter railroads are featured in this two-hour presentation of the Windy City 1993 NRHS Convention. Famous locomotives traveled great distances to treat convention goers to thrilling excursions and tours of historic locales. See Challenger 3985, ex-NKP engines 587 and 765, an old ten-wheeler and more steam! Pentrex was on the spot as the event’s official videographer, capturing all the activities for your enjoyment.

Metra F-Units opened the convention by powering a commuter train toward the Illinois Railway Museum. There you’ll see an operating Electro-Liner, a Frisco Ten-Wheeler, the Nebraska Zephyr, and other exotic equipment. Additional outings included special trains on CTA’s elevated lines through downtown Chicago and on the renowned South Shore’s interurban to South Bend, Indiana. Union Pacific Challenger 3985 powered a round trip to Findlay Junction, Illinois. You’ll get to ride aboard the 3985’s train and also enjoy great shots of it from trackside. Ex-Nickel Plate engines 587 and 765 thrilled passengers and spectators alike as the venerable steamers double-headed a round trip excursion to Argo, Indiana along the former Nickel Plate main line.

Pentrex did a great job covering this event, passenger specials to steam. It’s all covered. Seeing the Metra F’s in action was great. Can’t go wrong with double headed steam either. Being a Chicago native, I really enjoyed watching it and all the locations they hit.

As other reviewers have already stated… There is something in this production for everyone! The Illinois Railway Museum was running all different types of equipment at the time this sidetrip was taken for the 1993 NRHS Convention. All the steam trips of 3985, 587, and 765 are covered in great detail as well. The Chicago Transit Authority rail trip through downtown was pretty neat, too. This is 2 hours of action you definitely do not want to miss seeing… Not until after viewing Pentrex’s “prequel”, Steam To Chicago FIRST, of course. 🙂 Watch these two shows back-to-back for sure!

This is an amazing DVD! I like all the action from the Metra F-Units, to the doubleheader with 587 and 765. The part with the station unveiling and the car shop visits are also pretty unique. I also feel like I learned some things from this one. Defiantly one to pick up!

  5. Zac

Great DVD with all types of power. All of the steam trips are interesting and the trip on the South Shore is cool and the trip to the Illinois Museum is great. There is something for everyone.

This one has something for everybody, which is sorta unusual It has Vintage Diesels, Interurbans, Commuter, etc, plus Big Steam. The footage at the Illinois RR Museum will make you want to go there if you have never been. It is two hrs long, but worth the wait to get to the UP 3985 excursion trip, even has footage of yours truly firing her on the “Drive by Shooting. The doubleheader with the 587 & 765 was awesome. I have worn out two of the video tapes of it & now trying to wear out my DVD of it. Needless to say it is one of my favorites. If you have not seen it, you have missed out!
