It is 1997 and we get to see a very busy Union Pacific mainline. We also see quite a few yellow and green units still flagged for the recently merged Chicago North Western. Take a trip back in time to the busy UP line from North Platte to Cheyenne – UP’s Sidney Sub. We’ll see some action at the yards at each end of the line, and at many mainline locations. Many locations and trains are marked with on-screen captions. This video was shot using good “prosumer” equipment of the time, but is not up to the clarity of today’s high-definition video. It is however, an excellent snapshot of an important time in the nation’s railroad history. This DVD is divided into almost 50 chapters allowing you to quickly access various parts of this 2 hour video.

  1. Dan

One of those locations that led someone … probably a railfan … to coin the phrase “a steady parade of trains”! For two enjoyable hours the action is non-stop — high-horsepower locomotives pulling long, heavy trains on a legendary stretch of railroad. Union Pacific is the star, but the handsome C&NW paint scheme is still well represented. And while the video quality might not match what railfans are used to seeing in 2021, the historical value of MoKan’s programs more than makes up for any shortcomings you might find in the footage.

One of my favourite railroad regions in the USA. Having travelled 12+ hours (5 hour drive time from north of the “49th”) to see this Sub. in person, it is great to see it on video from a time frame that was still having the C&NW rolling on it. North Platte and west from there is awesome, and this video shows it at it’s best. Big, heavy trains working hard is always great, and no disappointments here. A favourite in my video library for sure.
