In 2019, the Union Pacific quietly announced there were no plans to overhaul Challenger #3985 following the restoration of Big Boy #4014. 3985 was to be permanently retired. In this program, we look back at the Challenger in action between 1992 and 2010.

This program covers operations east of Cheyenne, beginning with the movements to and from her visit to the old Clinchfield Railroad in the southeast in November, 1992. Also seen are appearances at National Railway Historical Society conventions in Chicago in 1993 and St. Louis in 2001. Numerous multi-day deadhead moves are followed, including pacing scenes in Nebraska and Iowa. The program ends with the last journey the 3985 made, which took her to Illinois on the old Missouri Pacific. This train was chased back to Cheyenne, and the program ends as the 3985 returned home for the last time.

This two-hour program shows the 3985 in action in all four seasons, and will be a welcome addition to the library of any fan of big steam.

Prior to the one-way donation to its new home at Silvis Illinois with 2-10-2 5511 & Centennial unit 6936 in November of 2022, 3985 has operated on mainline trackage throughout the entire UP system, as well as father east to CSX territory only in 1992.

Some of the railroad video producers were also on 3985’s trips in this program except for the June 1995 trip to Texas:

    1. Pentrex, Main Line Motion Pictures, Mark 1 video, American Altavista, & the late Greg Scholl video for November 1992 when 3985 was disguised as Clinchfield 676

    2. Pentrex & Main Line Motion Pictures for the 1993 NRHS Convention in Chicago during the flood

    3. Railway Productions for the 2001 NRHS Convention in St. Louis

    4. The Late Roger Holmes & TM Books & Video for the June 2002 visit to Iowa & Illinois

And 5. Holmes for both the 2004 trips to Texas, & the 2010 trip to St. Louis before it was retired for the second time while Steve Mitchell of Yard Goat Images was also on the 2010 chase with the Challenger.

Although there are some vintage films which includes surviving Big Boy 4017, there is a goof in the beginning that the narrator said that 3985 returned to service in 1982, when it should’ve meant 1981 when it was double-heading with 844/4 to Sacramento.
