In 1991, Arthur Purchase went on an epic railfan trip covering 19 days and 7 states. This program covers that trip and there was plenty of action on both class 1 carriers and shortlines. You will see F-units on the B&LE, high speed intermodals on the Santa Fe, a cab ride at the Monticello Railroad Museum and chase a BL2 on the WICT from Janesville, WI to the Chicago area. Several steam locomotives are also viewed. The NKP 765, an excursion at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, the N&W 1218 and the Reading 2102.

We view railroad action in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa. Starting on the B&LE in Pennsylvania, we work our way west, going as far west as Carrolton, Missouri outside of Kansas City and finishing up on the Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern with a mixed train lead by an ALCo C630 and GP30. Other highlights include a chase on the Cedar Rapid and Iowa City, the Columbia Terminal Railroad and the Toledo, Peoria and Western with their GP20’s in New York Central inspired paint.

I don’t want to bash these guys but the narration is terrible, guy sounds super nasally and 80% of the time he talks over the horn and engines passing the camera. The WSOR/WICT footage is very nice. The Crandic and Keokuck Jct trains are also nicely documented. Wish there was more TPW and Reading 2102 with the C630/GP30 leading a mixed train. Over all, decent, quality is just ok but that’s expected from 90’s video cameras.
