In 1984 we were fortunate to see the “Last of the Garratts” on line workings with a day-long ballast train hauled by GMAM Garratt 4088 from Waterval Boven to Breyten and return. These were the most modern Garratts in South Africa and are 4-8-2+2-8-4 wheel arrangement engines. We also see different engines in yard switching duties(Shunting). Next we chase doubleheaded class 24 2-8-4’s from Breyten to Lothair with some nice results. Lastly we visit the Randfontein Estates Gold Mine Railway near Johannesburg, where GMAM Garratts work on this Industrial Line hauling gold ore, or reef as it is called in South Africa. Besides the Garratts we will also see a few of the older 4-8-2 engines that were formerly South Africa Railways locomotives. Live audio and informative narration and the last video in our 1984 South African Steam Collection.

In this last volume of the late Greg’s recently turned 40 year old South African Steam Collection, there are not only a variety of Articulated Garratts in action, but also non-articulated locomotives like the 24 class 2-8-4s, & 4-8-2s.
The segments shown in order are:
1. a look at the Waterval Boven Yard & Roundhouse on June 26th with 4108 & 4133 switching some cars at sunset
2. Next day June 27th with 4088 on a Ballast train coal tender first to Breyten & back with one GEA Garratt on the return trip to be cut for scrap
3. Class 24 2-8-4s (one of them being since-scrapped 3618) Double-heading from Breyten to the Lothair Branch via Voorslag on the next day June 28th
4. The Randfontein Estates Gold Mine in Johannesburg on July 18th to the 20th before flying back home to Batavia
And 5. history of the engines seen in this program
Shortly after the South Africa trips, Greg chased 611 & 765 Between Bellevue & Cincinnati as the city itself would mark as the Headquarters for that year’s NRHS convention where 765 operated on all of the trips during the Berkshire’s 40th birthday specials.
