The Summerville Steam Special follows an historic route from our Grand Junction depot in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Summerville, Georgia and return. Crossing the state line in Rossville, the train wanders through the outskirts of the Chickamauga & Chattanooga Military Park and then passes through the small Georgia towns of Chickamauga, Rock Spring, LaFayette, Trion, and finally Summerville. Departure for this all day trip is 9:00 A.M. and returns approximately 6:00 P.M. Eastern Time.

Fall colors are a scenic highlight during the autumn trips, but every train offers optional dining service and a relaxing layover in Summerville to explore town or get lunch. For many, the highlight of the day is listening to one of our steam locomotives pull the train through the Georgia foothills. See why the Summerville Steam Special lives up to its name! The route the train follows is over the former Central of Georgia Railway once it departs the East Chattanooga Belt Railway at 23rd Street in Chattanooga. The track is owned by Norfolk Southern to Rossville, and then the State of Georgia further south, where it is currently operated by the Genesee & Wyoming as the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway. Locomotives are turned on the turntable, serviced, and watered in Summerville for the return trip to Chattanooga.

This video showcases all of this action, so come along now as we explore the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s Summerville Steam Special with Southern Railway’s #630 and #4501!

In this 2019 program, this Un-Narrated show covers multiple trips on the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum with mostly 4501 taking the spotlight, but there are also segments which features 630 double-heading with the 1911 Baldwin built Mikado.

The dates during the visit to this all-day route from Chattanooga to Summerville include:

    1. November 5, 2016, with 4501 alone

    2. A week & A Day Later on November 13, 2016, with both 630 & 4501 as the 1904 Alco Built Consolidation wears a deep-toned Steamboat whistle

    3. May 21, 2017, with another Double-header this time 630 is wearing a different whistle & unfortunately, the 2-8-0’s front wheels derail at Summerville.

And 4. June 3, 2017, with yet another Double-header as 630 & 4501 roll through the Chickamauga Tunnel built in 1858.

Even though the title says that this is the first part of the Green Frog Summerville Steam Special series, there are still un-announced dates on when future sequels with 630 & 4501 are going to be released, but it’s still a neat companion to other Green Frog titles that feature Southern Steam: The Rock Island Line, 4501-3 decades of excursions, ’70s & ’80s Steam Celebration, & Tennessee Steam Excursions.
