We begin this program aboard engine no. 90 as we depart from the station at Strasburg. You will see the engineman and fireman hard at work with close-ups of the fire box, controls and gauges. After arriving at Paradise the engine changes ends for the return trip to Strasburg. With the camera mounted on the roof of engine no.90 you will get a spectacular view as we round the curve at “Hobo Camp” and approach Esbenshades crossing. The following engines are featured: PRR engine no.7002 (an E-7 which set a world speed record in 1905 while pulling the Broadway Limited in Ohio),PRR engine no.1223 a D-16b 4-4-0, No. 31 an ex-Canadian National Baldwin 0-6-0, an ex-Great Western Baldwin 2-10-0, no.90 and additional equipment on display.

A visit to Lancaster County Pennsylvania was made during 1985 as some steam engines are shown operating from the main depot to Leaman Place Junction in Paradise: Great Western 2-10-0 Decapod 90 built in 1924 by Baldwin, as well as Canadian National 0-6-0 number 7312 that was renumbered to 31 as it was the very first steam engine to operate on the Strasburg Railroad in the early years of the line’s tourist era, & even a pair of Pennsylvania Railroad engines that have since been put back on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania across the street from the depot: Atlantic Type Locomotive 7002, & 4-4-0 number 1223. The cab of CN 2-6-0 number 89 is placed next to a center cab diesel outside the shops.

The whole 5-mile branch line have changed a lot over the years including the locomotives, coaches, Strasburg Yard, Station Area, The Red Caboose Motel at Fairview Crossing, the Groff’s Grove Picnic Area at Cherry Hill, the bridge between Carpenter’s Crossing & Leaman Place Junction, & even the Conrail Connection itself at Leaman Place as well.

Later in the program during June of ’85, 1223 & 7002 were on an all-day doubleheaded excursion from the Strasburg Depot to Harrisburg on Amtrak & Conrail Trackage, while months earlier in the winter, number 90 does some snow busting in the yard as well as switching some cars.

A Cab ride on 1223 is also included, as well as some radio scanner communications, & a visit to the shops. Music is played from the tower near the Red Caboose Motel & Toy Train Museum. Also at the Motel, a man is playing a tune on the Accordion.

Many people of all ages young & old came back year after year to ride the rails on what traveling on an old-fashioned steam engine was like.
