In 1983 Roger Holmes purchased a VHS recorder and camera. Over the next ten years he would capture many steam locomotives riding on Norfolk Southern rails in the Midwest, namely the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Missouri. The exception was Savannah & Atlanta #750 on the New Georgia Railroad, included because it pulled many excursionists on the Southern part of the NS. Other locomotives include NKP 765, alone and double headed with NKP 587, N&W 611, 1218, and Frisco 1522. Take a ride back into the 1980’s & 90’s with tons of runbys, some pacing, some on train, and cab rides in Loco numbers 750 and 1218.

Here’s the Segments that are shown in order:

    1. 611 leading the Independence Limited at Waverly OH on July 19, 1993 in the opening credits

    2. 611 at Illiopolis IL on June 17, 1985 with a pacing sequence & a ride behind the J

    3. 1218 heading to Ft. Wayne IN on Saturday June 18, 1988 with a pacing sequence

    4. 765 on May 4 & 5, 1984 while wearing a Mars Light between Bellevue & Toledo & back with a ride pass the Mad River & NKP Museum

    5. 1522 from St. Louis to Decatur & return on Saturday October 22, 1988 while on Wabash Rails

    6. 750 at Atlanta with a cab ride on less than a week before Christmas (December 19) 1987

    7. 611 from St. Louis to Moberly on July 6, 1986 with 2 pacing sequences & a turntable

    8. 1218 on the Independence Limited on Tuesday June 12 from Centralia to the 1990 NRHS Convention in St. Louis where it’ll join 1522, 844, & 819

    9. A cab ride on 1218 during July of 1991 which is a month before that year’s NRHS convention in Huntington WV with 765 & 1225

    10. Speaking of 765-the Berkshire itself on October 20 & 21, 1984 between Ft. Wayne & Lafayette with pacing scenes shot by Bill Steinraus (note the removal of the mars light, as well as a high-pitched UK Whistle)

    11. 1522 from St. Louis to Coffeen on June 27 & 28, 1992

    12. 611 on 7-19-93 while leading the Independence Limited between Portsmouth & Ft. Wayne

And 13. the next day 7-20-93 with 765 & 587 Double-heading to the NRHS Convention in Chicago.

Fact: on the 10-22-88 trip with 1522, the late Greg Scholl was also on the same trip & at sunset especially at night, Greg was in 1522’s cab on the return to St. Louis. Not only that, but 2 years later, Greg was also chasing 1218 to St. Louis in 1990 out of Columbus.

As Always, every title that Roger Holmes made was Un-Narrated.
