Railroading “hot spots” are where railfans can see many trains in a short amount of time. Following upon the success of Conrail Hot Spots East, Pentrex set out to record many of the revered hot spots on the western half of the system: Locations in Ohio include Ashtabula, Alliance, Crestline, the Cleveland Drawbridge, Berea Tower, Galion, Marion, Port Clinton, Toledo, and Ridgeway. Indiana sites include Elkhart, South Bend, Porter, Hammond, Muncie, and Terre Haute and in Illinois the action is at St. Elmo and Effingham.

All Conrail trains are identified by their symbols indicating departure cities and destinations. Big Blue puts on an impressive show for us with its fleet of power that was relatively new for 1996, such as SD60s and C40s. Locomotives from other railroads are seen on Conrail trains as run-through power. In addition, trains belonging to CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, Illinois Central, and Grand Trunk Western are seen at many of the important junctions. Released originally in 1996, this presentation is now available with the enhanced viewing clarity and ease that DVD can offer. Join us for an exciting tour of railroading along Conrail Hot Spots West!

Good overview of the western half of both Conrail lines. Conrail in its hay day, for sure. Clean SD60I’s older GE C and B boats leading trains. Conrail Quality paint is fresh! Nice at speed run bys of the TV trains too.

A Great program featuring the west side of the Conrail system. Good amount of time spent at each location. Been to a lot of the locations thanks to this program. Good info on every place by explaining routes and more. Interesting what changed at these locations after the Conrail split. But that’s another program…

I cannot count the number of times that I have watched this video! Being from the midwest I loved seeing Conrail action in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio! I loved seeing Big Blue during its 23 year existence and miss seeing the variety of motive power and paint schemes (of other roads) captured in this video. Great video of the Chicago and St. Louis lines (my favorite)!

An interesting assortment of locations in the Conrail system. Lots of trains and various power. A few locations not really cosidered to be hotspots for Conrail, but adds to the variety in the movie. For the railfan who wants to travel to various locations, all can be covered within a few days to a week. This adds to the movie because if you follow the locations on a map, you will enjoy the movie even more. Nothing is that far apart time wise. I enjoyed it.
