In this DVD, Trains looks at the amazing steam locomotive called Skookum, also known as the Lazarus locomotive. Only one of six built, this 1909 locomotive was rejected, accepted, and left for dead in 1955, and revived in 2019. We’ll cover the history, the lore, and the restoration before we take you along to enjoy four days of operations in spectacular scenery at the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad in March 2019. Running Time: 65 minutes plus 15 minutes of bonus footage!

I was overjoyed when the Skookum returned to life after her tragic accident in February 1955. Built by Baldwin in 1909, this locomotive is considered to be one of the first articulated locomotives in America. She was used for logging operations in Little River Railway in Tennessee before moving to Oregon. February 23, 1955 saw her tragic wreck in Washington while making a reverse move to Grays Harbor and a broken rail derailed her off the tracks. With no easy ways to get her back on track, they abandoned her in the woods. 63 years later in October 2018, the Skookum returned to steam on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad and just 6 months later on March 14, 2019 the Skookum pulled her first photo charter along with McCloud railway #25 and Polson Logging Company #2. These were the Skookum’s last dance in the state of Oregon as she was about to be transferred to the Niles Canyon railroad in California. Although I was downhearted about her derailment, you gotta give the people a lot of credit on bringing her back to steam.
