Touted as America’s most talked-about train, the California Zephyr took travelers from Chicago to Oakland/San Francisco in style. It was the flagship train of the CB&Q, D&RGW and Western Pacific and was known for the spectacular scenery of the Rockies as seen through its dome cars.
This video is unique in that you not only climb aboard the California Zephyr and experience the magic of a unique train – but also meet the people who made the Zephyr special.
Enjoy a meal in the dining car as described in memories of a dining car steward, or have Zephyrettes share their daily experience with you. Find out what it was like to ride in a Vista-Dome as recalled by several passengers, or learn from the person who presided over the demise of the train how difficult it was to terminate the California Zephyr.
Silver Thread Through the West is produced by Richard W. Luckin, an award winning documentary producer/director.

Aired in 1999, this video chronicles what railroading in the hearland as well as the rockies and the feather river canyon was like before Airplanes Automobiles and Amtrak. The music was excellent in this, as well as the vintage films of the original zephyr fom the CB&Q Rio Grande and WP.
