Santa Fe’s 5011 Class 2-10-2 locomotives in action in New Mexico in 1956 and 1957 and then we follow these massive machines east! With an acute motive power shortage in 1956, the Pennsylvania Railroad leased 12 of the monsters and used them in Ohio in 1956.
In New Mexico we pace engines 2021 and 2017 for 22 minutes between Belen and Mountaineer. The sound film is excellent as we see what may have been the last film of these locomotives as they were retired the next year. After that, it’s the Santa Fe in Ohio! What a show as when a dozen of the Santa Fe 5011 Class steam locomotive were leased for service between Columbus and Sandusky, mostly for heavy coal trains.
The PRR portion of this show has been seen before, on two other Herron shows, Steam & Diesel on the PRR Volume 2 and in Pennsylvania Glory Volume 2, but now it joins the rest of the 5011 class footage and for the first time all of these footage is available in one place. 48 minutes, mostly color footage and all with authentic sound.
