Fast freight was a matter of pride and profit for the Santa Fe. From Wellington, Kansas to KC, Missouri, autoracks, manifests, containers and Santa Fe’s speciality, pig trains, all could get a speedy 70 miles an hour highball as they dashed east and west on the Emporia Sub.
We spend time at Kansas City’s busy Santa Fe Junction before heading a couple of miles west to AY Tower, Argentine Yard, and Turner Tower. Then it’s train after train all the way to Wellington.
This program features informed narration, on-screen locations and train symbols plus select track diagram and location maps. Video navigation by menu and chapters. Narration on/off feature.

A great look at an often overlooked section of the Santa Fe’s Chicago to California mainline. The Emporia Sub across the state of Kansas may not be as praised as Cajon, Raton or Abo Canyon, but the line across the Flint Hills offer their own unique charm as trains snake their way through. Today, BNSF has double tracked the hills, so traffic is expected to increase through there.
Santa Fe’s Super Fleet locomotives were in their prime when this was filmed and gives us another glimpse on the Warbonnet ruled the rails before a sea of Swooshes became the norm.
Highly recommend for any Santa Fe fan.
