Originally released in late 1992/early 1993, this program features coverage from 12 camera crews, as the Postwar built northern itself provides a never forgotten journey on the 5% grade in North Carolina during lovely fall colors.

Locations aside from Saluda itself includes: The Twin Balloon Loops, Salisbury, the Catawba river bridge, Claremont, Oyama, Hickory, Valdese, Glen Alpine, Morganton, Clinch-cross, Greenlee, Old Fort, Andrew’s Geyser, Swannanoa Tunnel, Asheville, Biltmore, Tryon, Melrose, Sand cut, Summit Lake, Marion, Charlotte, Gastonia, Kings Mountain, Grover (Not the Sesame Street Muppet), Gaffney where 611 meets with a Conrail painted freight, Cowpens, Spartanburg where it meets another freight & gets some service at Hayne Yard, plus Inman, Gramling, Landrum, Slaughter Pen Cut, & others.

There are also interviews as well as historic still images, plus a demonstration on Saluda with NS freight trains not to mention a flashback to 1989 while traveling on the loops, a flashback to March 1992 on the 5% grade, & even a short clip montage from the 1984 NS Training Video: Saluda the mountain of challenge which the full video can be found on the Saluda Combo from Pentrex.

Bob Loehne and his team at American Altavista Productions have ALWAYS done an absolutely WORLD-CLASS job covering the Norfolk Southern Steam Program in the early 1990s… and this film on our beloved Lady J’s first march up the fabled Saluda Grade is no exception! I first bought this production on DVD directly from Mr. Loehne himself several years ago. This “Green Frog remaster” is sometimes a bit TOO “polished”, and it cuts out a couple good parts Bob had in the original version which he sold to me personally. Overall, however, this is a MUST HAVE purchase! It will fit perfectly in your collection of N&W 611 DVDs… There is also a “follow-up” film by American Altavista called “Saluda 611 Deux”, which I also purchased directly from Bob Leohne. It covers 611’s SECOND trip up Saluda in 1993. All that being said, you will no doubt thoroughly enjoy this first attempt by our great Queen Of Steam to conquer the unforgiving 4% to 5% hill. Throughout the time leading up to the big moment (the first hour and a half of the film), Bob Leohne SUPERBLY narrates the entire adventure. He tells you what is going on every step of the way in his unique, witty, humorous manner. He also gives a few important history lessons along the way. There are great interviews, great trackside sights, and second-to-none runbys with clear, exhilarating sound. Don’t miss out on witnessing this historical occasion!
