Diesels are taking over for steam in the New York Central’s Indiana Division and neighbors, but we still catch some steam working hard. The action begins on the Michigan Branch with local trains operating out of Wabash, Indiana to Marion, Indiana with 2-8-2s. We take a side trip to Payne, Ohio to grab a nice interlude of NKP steam.
In several visits to Cincinnati in 1956 and 1957, the last days of NYC steam are featured with 4-8-2 Mohawks running in tandem or as helpers as those newfangled diesels began to infiltrate the Cincinnati to Greensburg line. Mikados are seen on the Whitewater Branch and in yard service at Riverside Yard in Cincinnati. There are Mikados in the 1300, 1400, 1500 and 1900 series plus L2, L3, and L4 Mohawks and 0-8-0 switchers.
We also have footage at Greensburg, Indiana with L2 and L3 power plus an ex-Indiana Harbor Belt 2-8-2. After steam’s demise on the Indiana Division, the action switches to the Ohio Central Division where first generation diesels are featured into the 1960s. You’ll find EMD F units, FM C-Liners, and ALCO FA’s as well as GP 9’s and GP 20’s. Quite a bit of this show is in color. All of it is from crisp 16mm film.
