Today, only an abandoned right-of-way extends across the grassy hills and pine forests of Montana and Washington State. But, this was the domain of the mighty Milwaukee Electrics. Fortunately, Doug Jones of Milwaukee visited this land in 1965 and 1968, and with 16mm camera in hand, documented this unique bit of American railroad history.

See the “Joes” in action over Pipestone Pass and “Box Cabs” crossing the Columbia River. A steeple cab switches the South Butte Yard. The distinctive sound of this rugged and powerful form of motive power on the Hi-Fi soundtrack of this DVD was originally recorded by Don L Hunter of Eugene, Oregon. The story of these engines is told by railfan-actor-announcer Rege Cordic.

  1. Curtis Watson

An awesome railroad line through incredible territory. One of the more unique mainlines in the US. This 40-minute program will leave you wanting more, but it’s an excellent first-step into the Milwaukee Road.

  2. Mwdonoughue

This program showcases the Milwaukee’s mighty “Boxcab” and “Little Joe” electrics, along with diesels, as they power freights along the electrified portion of the MILW’s mainline through Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

  3. rickyfreni

Little Joes, Box cabs, ES2 switchers, GP9s, GP40s, and even a Northern Pacific F Unit on the North Coast Limited provide a decent look at what mountain railroading in the northwest section of America has to offer. There are Horseshoe Curves, Bridges, tunnels, and rivers along the way while exploring Idaho, Washington State, & Of course Montana.
