First Class U.S. Mail was sorted by clerks aboard a fleet of cars which once numbered over 4,000. Here you will enter their secluded world, hemmed in by stanchions stacked with parcels, rows of hanging pouches and, above, boxes lining both sides. Ride the “Chief” and “Fast Mail” in the closing days of RPOs on the SANTA FE – and observe a rare miscue as one bag is dropped on the ballast.

Here, too, is a training film which explains some of the intricacies of this demanding job. A tribute to OWNEY, the CELEBRATE THE CENTURY EXPRESS, and an RPO demonstration at ILLINOIS RAILWAY MUSEUM from other portions of this survey. You will watch colorful mail cars of several dozen lines parade by from the 40s to the eve of AMTRAK.

You will enjoy this glimpse into a rarely photographed world, long since replaced by large regional centers which revolve around zip codes. Share it with your trustworthy mail carrier and your local postmaster – they will value this look back into how the mail was once handled on the rails.

This 2011 title showcases what it was like carrying mail by train all across America, as well as some from around the world.

A variety of Vintage Films in both Black & White & Color from the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York Central, Chesapeake & Ohio, Milwaukee Road with the exact same colors of the Union Pacific, Lehigh Valley, Missouri Pacific, Illinois Central, Wabash, Erie Lackawanna, Burlington, Cleveland Union Terminal Electric, Jersey Central, Chicago & Northwestern, Reading with New Hope depot now part of today’s New Hope & Ivyland Scenic, New Haven, Norfolk & Western, Rock Island, Gulf Mobile & Ohio, & Penn Central, as well as riding on the Santa Fe from Kansas City Missouri to Albuquerque New Mexico via La Junta Colorado in September & October of 1967, to modern action at the Algoma Central, Illinois Railway Museum with C&NW SD40-2 #6847, steam cameos from Northern Pacific 4-6-0 #328, & a British built 4-6-2, plus Amtrak Genesis unit 100 painted in special colors for the Postal Service in July of ’11 are included.

There is also a company film by the US Post Office Department in 1956 called: Men & Mail in Transit. Plus, there is also a special stamp dedicated to Owney the Dog who loves to ride the rails.

Did You Know that during the 1950s, 10,000 Sacks of Mail were handled Daily in Washington DC?

All in all, Ronald McElrath did a decent job narrating this program.
