This is just after the Wall came down as we visit former East Germany. See narrow gauge steam action on the Harz Mountain system, with the largest narrow gauge tank engines operating in Germany. The Harz line is very picturesque and features street running, stone stations, and hilly territory, with wooded backgrounds and even a tunnel. Watch the departure of two passenger trains from one station. The two trains ran side-by-side until the two lines split heading in different directions.

In addition to the Harz Mountain System, we visit the steep Cranzahl to Oberwiesenthal line which includes tank engines and nice snowy scenes throughout the segment. This is the best narrow gauge in Germany, all of which survives today!

  1. Mwdonoughue

This visit to the former East Germany features two narrow gauge lines operating in the mountains, with primarily class 099 2-10-2T locomotives as the motive power, but we also see a few diesels operating on some trains.

  2. rickyfreni

In Volume 2 of the recently turned 25 year old series, Randy Scholl made a 1992 visit to Germany & witnessed 2 scenic lines in the Country itself.

    The Class 099 2-10-2 tank engines that are covered throughout the program contains: 749, 737, 738, 7212, 7231, 7240, 7232, 7246, 7245, 7244, 7241, & 7222.

Locations on the Cranzahl to Oberwiesenthal line includes Neudorf, Kretcham, Hammerunterwiesenthal, Unterwiesenthal, & along the Czech Border.

There are also a variety of locations on the Harz mountain system which includes the Standard gauge to converted narrow gauge class 199 diesels that are nicknamed Camels because of their height.

While most of the Steam Around the World collection is Narrated by Mike Leland, this is one of the 2 titles in this series to be narrated by the late John Edward Hingsbergen along with Cuba-Stronghold of American Steam although Leland narrated previews for these 2 titles.
