Let’s go back now to the years before World War II as we take an Excursion to the Thirties aboard the last Narrow Gauge Railroads of Colorado. We’ll see some rare sights: In the mountains west of Denver Colorado… a Colorado & Southern freight follows narrow gauge track through Clear Creek Canyon.

The Denver & Rio Grande Western luxury narrow gauge passenger train “San Juan” leaves Durango and the “Shavano” heads West to Gunnison. A mixed freight makes the run between Durango and Silverton. The “Chili Train” arrives at Santa Fe, New Mexico. A Rio Grande Southern freight crosses one of the magnificent trestles at Ophir. From Denver the Colorado and Southern is running trains to Golden, Idaho Springs, Georgetown, Black Hawk, Central City, Como, Fairplay, Leadville and other famous towns of the mining era.

From rare 8mm color films taken 1937 to 1941 by Richard B Jackson. With narration and railroad sounds.

This program includes a myriad of subjects that are seldom seen on video today, such as Rio Grande Narrow Gauge before the flying lettering was applied, along with some railroads whose narrow gauge operations disappeared before most major railroad photographers could document them in operation.

If you are a C&S fan this is a must have video. Much Rio Grande passenger action with K-28’s before the “Flying RG”. I have this in VHS and the DVD is much lower quality. I understand the subject was filmed in the 1930’s but the VHS is clearer and less grainy. Even at that the rarity of the equipment makes it an awesome part of a video collection.

This by far is the best DVD I have bought so far. When it comes to great/rare footage of Colorado narrow gauge, this one has it. Color footage from the late thirties and very early forties of the C&S, D&RGW, RGS, and even a very brief scene of the Silverton Northern just prior to it disappearing. Almost all scenes on the D&RGW are prior to the flying Rio Grande lettering showing up. Ride the Shavano and the San Juan through portions of the railroad that are unfortunately long gone.
