The merger of six bankrupt railroads into the Consolidated Rail Corporation on April 1, 1976 was destined to change the face of railroading in the Northeast forever. In May of 1976, Paul Geiger set out to record the first days of the new giant, and to film what remained of the Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Lehigh and Hudson River, Central New Jersey, and, of course, the mighty Penn Central. “Conrail’s Beginning” follows Paul’s journey, visiting each of the component roads at locations including Buffalo, Sayre, Elmira, Binghamton, Newark, Elizabethport, Reading, Harrisburg, Altoona, and more! So join us, as we explore the beginning of THE major carrier in the Northeast – the Company that bucked the odds and confounded the experts – the railroad that came to be known as Big Blue. 100 minutes. Color with audio and narration.

If you like early Conrail this is for you. Not many videos out there truly covering this era. This is one of those. I think Clear Block Productions was one of the best producers on the market. It is a shame that he didn’t get to produce more videos.
