Chicagoland Tower Views takes a look at thirteen locations in Chicago and Northern Indiana. Machines of Iron visited these spots in 1999 and 2000. Some of the towers have since closed. We’ll see Corwith Tower, Brighton Park Crossing, Root Street Tower, Ash Street Crossing, Gresham Tower, Vermont Street Tower and station (Blue Island), Blue Island Junction, State Line Tower, Hohman Avenue Tower, Grasselli Tower, and Hick Tower. There are plenty of trains to see from CSX, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, Soo, Conrail, Norfolk Southern, Indiana Harbor Belt, Union Pacific, Amtrak, Metra, and many more..

  1. J.D. McKibben

This DVD is shot in the 1999 – 2000 time period and features visits to about 13 towers (many now destroyed) in the Chicagoland area. Although not exhaustive in covering ALL towers (how could they, without creating a 3 – hour DVD!) it does a nice job with the ones they include.

Narration is solid, covering original RR ownership, current RR control responsibility and track diagrams to introduce each tower. A good number of the towers include INTERIOR shots of all the control boards/levers being activated, etc. which is a really great feature of the DVD.

There’s alot of action shots with a WIDE variety of RRs represented, as well as interesting rolling stock types, including a molten steel “bottle car” move, an extremely large high/wide load on an ATSF 4-truck flatcar, and IHB Vulcan stone/ballast train. Most locomotives are identified by model number which is a nice touch too.

If you’re a fan of the Indiana Harbor Belt (like me) you’ll want this DVD as it covers Blue Island Crossing/Tower, State Line Tower, Hohman Avenue Tower, and Calumet Tower. (All now gone with the exception of Blue Island.)
